During the two decades following WWII when the US education system was overwhelmed by shortages of people holding Education degrees from universities the schools were turning out graduates more skilled in math, science, language, geography, literature etc than anytime since. During much of that time most teachers held degrees in the fields they taught, but had never been through any course in a university
